Betty Sherock, 97, of Girard, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at Heritage Manor with her family by her side.
Betty was born on January 19, 1929 in Youngstown, Ohio, a daughter to the late Stephen and Julia (Makar) Kovachik, Sr.
Betty’s long life was exemplified by love, awe, and humor. She found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life, displaying a deep appreciation for both natural beauty and man-made creations. She had an undeniable zest for life and was beloved for her warmth, quick wit, and ability to connect with anyone she met. Betty never knew a stranger.
She was a talented artist, avid reader, and explorer of a multitude of musical artists and genres. In more recent years, she enjoyed word-search puzzles and game shows which were among her favorite pastimes, as well as meticulously preparing pirohy, Italian wedding soup, and her famous Swiss steak for loved ones to enjoy.
Most dear to her heart, however, was her involvement in the lives of her children and their growing families. Betty was a devoted mother, always present, supportive, and deeply invested in the happiness and success of her family.
Betty left high school to work at a local service station as an attendant and bookkeeper during WWII. She was proud to eventually attain her high school GED certificate the same year that her youngest daughter graduated from high school. Betty enjoyed a fulfilling career in retail sales, working for several large department stores in the area.
She was a lifelong member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Girard.
She is survived by her daughters, Debbie Guthrie, Julie Stanec, and Christine (Carl “Tyke”) Racketa, as well as her sons, Mark (Diane Kirk) Sherock, Nicholas (Jennifer) Sherock, and David C. (Karen) Sherock and sister-in-law, Theresa Sherock. Betty had 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Along with her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Nicholas Sherock, whom she married on May 10, 1947 and who passed away February 8, 1986, infant son David N. Sherock, son Rick Sherock, and her brother, Stephen Kovachik, Jr.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Heritage Manor and Akeso Hospice, especially to Lenore, for their kindness and care.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, July 17th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard with a memorial mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church in Girard.
Betty will be laid to rest next to her husband at Calvary Cemetery.
