Gilbert "Gib" J. Woods

Gilbert “Gib” J. Woods, Sr., 87, of McDonald, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at home surrounded by his family. Gilbert was born October 17, 1930 in Follansebee, West Virginia, son of Robert and Beatrice (Bowen) Woods.

Gilbert graduated from McDonald High School in 1949.  He worked at U.S. Steel McDonald Works for 30 years and owned Gib’s Dairy Bar in McDonald.  Upon the mill closing in 1980, he became a custodian for McDonald High School.  During his tenure at MHS, he was more than a custodian to the Special Education Department; he was an asset as he worked daily with many of the students teaching them skills to be used in lifelong activities.  He was a member of the Woodland Park United Methodist Church in McDonald, and while residing on Pymatuning Lake, he attended Williamsfield United Methodist Church in Williamsfield, Ohio.  He served as a McDonald councilman from 1950-1951. Gilbert was a huge fan of the McDonald Blue Devils, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Indians, and Browns, and the Akron Zips football team.

He leaves these loved ones to cherish his memory: his wife, Katherine A. (Bucan) Woods, whom he married October 17, 1953; his daughters, Patricia (Fred) Gault of McDonald and Cathy (Michael Maierson) Woods of McDonald; a daughter-in-law, Shawn Woods of Mineral Ridge; four grandchildren, Brandon (Felicia) Woods, Sara (Sean) Gardner, Sophia (Brett) Ekkens, and Anna (Paul Adair) Gault; and three great-grandchildren, Katie and Ellie Gardner and Samantha Woods.

Besides his parents, Gilbert is preceded in death by his son, Gilbert J. Woods Jr., and his siblings; Mildred Marshall, Florence Antolini, Geraldine Noble, Vernon Woods, and Robert Woods.

A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday at 4:00 pm at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard. The family will receive relatives and friends from 2:00 pm until the time of the service.
