Kim Lian Chen, 94, of Youngstown, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio.
Kim Lian was born on February 9, 1931 in Singapore, a daughter to the late Wong Siew Nghnee and Lum Lin Ho.
Kim Lian pursued her education with determination, receiving her degree in social work and library science from Hong Kong University. She later earned her Registered Nurse (RN) degree in 1976, a profession in which she thrived, working at various doctors' offices and demonstrating her compassionate nature. For over 20 years, she served as a Girard Free Librarian, where her passion for literature and community engagement left a lasting impact on many.
In addition to her professional achievements, Kim Lian was a cherished member of the Youngstown Chinese Association, contributing to the cultural richness of her community. Her interests included traveling, reading, bowling, and gardening.
Kim Lian is survived by her three children: Barbara Chen, Albert Chen, and Lawrence (Patricia) Chen. She also leaves behind her beloved sister, Serena Chong, and her grandchildren, Samuel, Sean, and Abigail Chen.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Ching Chi Chen, who she married on August 8, 1959 and siblings Margaret Hon Yin, Seow Eng, Yew Hon, Yew Kam, Yew Nam, Yew Koey, Yew Cheong, and Joshua Yu Chong.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, May 23rd from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by a Mass at 10:30 AM, both held at St. Rose Church in Girard.
Kim Lian will be laid to rest at Tod Homestead Cemetery next to her husband.
