Margaret Hyden

Margaret (“Peg”) Hyden of Hiram, Ohio, died on July 15, 2025. She was born in Warren on December 28, 1936, to Mary and Patrick Harrington.

She attended St. Mary’s High school in Warren, where after graduation she began working at Packard Electric where she met her husband of 65 years, John D. Hyden. Married on November 23, 1957, at St. Mary’s, John and Peg moved their growing family several times due to John’s work, finally settling in Hiram. Peg worked at PG Data in Garrettsville and in the Education Department at Hiram College for almost twenty years, where she was cherished for her dedication, professionalism, work ethic, and meticulous care of the department, its faculty, and students.

Throughout the years, Peg, with her beloved husband, John, enjoyed trips to New Orleans, Florida, London, Paris, the Bahamas, Antigua and Ireland. She would also travel any distance to visit and to help out her children or grandchildren, whether in-state, out-of-state, or overseas. A member of the Irish Heritage Society in Warren, Peg was proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed hosting family and friends from Ireland. A lifelong, faithful daughter of the Church, Peg was a member of St. Ambrose Church in Garrettsville for many years, where she helped at the Chicken Dinner Festival, and at St. Joseph Church in Mantua, where she worked at the Ox Roast Fair and visited shut-in parishioners.

In her retirement, she attended Mass daily. Peg was and always will be the heart of her family. She was the best mom ever and utterly selfless when it came to her family. A woman of great fortitude, she was an inspiration to all. Caring for her husband and children at all hours of the day or night, she spent her “free time” at night wallpapering, ironing, bookkeeping, mending, baking, typing, writing birthday and anniversary cards to family and friends, and tending to anyone who was sick or who needed encouragement or just hugs. (We’re not really sure when she slept!). She chauffeured children, tended to the yard work when John was away and assisted him with it when he was home, and took care of him faithfully when his health declined. She made a big breakfast each Sunday after Mass, dinner for up to ten every night, and frequently hosted over thirty family members and friends at holiday dinners. No one left Peg’s house hungry! Peg seemed indomitable, caring not only for her children and husband, but for the countless friends she welcomed into her home, and for her own parents and other relatives and friends as they neared the end of their lives. For her, this was all a labor of love. She relished everyday family routines, as well as big gatherings with family and friends, and wanted only to be surrounded by her people, sharing hardships, joys, stories and laughter in every season of life. Peg loved her family fiercely. Her faith and the love of her family sustained her throughout her life.

Left to mourn her loss—but to rejoice that she has been reunited with John (d. 2022), with her daughter Aileen (d. 2015), her mother, father, sisters Sr. Mary Frances, Kathleen and Theresa, and brother Jack, as well as so many other deceased relatives and friends—are her children Maureen, John (Martha), Colleen, Kathleen, Christine Veltri (Tony), Maggie Bickel (Paul), and Kevin (Marian). She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Johnny Holleran (Sheri) and Jonathan; Lynda Holleran and Ian, Isaac, and Izzy; Kelly Cramer (Mark) and J.J.; Kate Miller (Kevin); Patrick (Samantha); Alexandra and Victoria Veltri; Christian and Clare Bickel; Grace Lamansky (James) and Michael; Tom, Kevin, and Mary Margaret Hyden; and her siblings: Joe Harrington, Patricia Thomas, and Elaine Hackstedde.

A Funeral Mass will be said at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church, 291 Scoville Dr. in Vienna, on Friday, July 25, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation starting at 10:00AM. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Hiram, Ohio.
