Ronald Lee Saffell, 79, of Girard, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026, at the Hospice House in Poland.
Ron was born on August 22, 1946 in Salem, Ohio, a son to Arthur and Eula (Riffle) Saffell.
Ron was a proud YSU graduate, earning his BA in English and MA in linguistics. He dedicated his career to teaching English and theatrics at Howland High School, where he inspired countless students with his dedication and enthusiasm for language and culture. He also coached boys and girls tennis and was the drama director there. Retiring in 2007 after 34 years, Ron became a member of the Howland Retired Teachers Association and also met with his former co-workers, always at Panera for coffee and fellowship. After retirement, Ron also taught adult French classes and enjoyed substitute teaching, especially at his grandchildren’s schools. He loved competitive games of Scrabble, bocce, and Jeopardy and was fond of traveling with family and friends. He was always the life of the party, engaging guests in games, showing off his magic tricks, or juggling. And of course he was president and founder of his Men’s Movie Club.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 51 years, Michele (Masucci) Saffell, whom he married on September 14, 1974; his daughters, Andrea (Tim) Moore of Poland and Corinne (Daniel) Simon of Winter Park, Florida. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Gordon and Monica Moore, and Sienna Simon, who brought him much joy. He also is survived by his nieces, nephews, and an abundance of dear friends.
Ron was preceded in death by his father; mother, stepfather, Floyd Hoffman; and sister, Evelyn Myers.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 25th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard with a funeral service to follow at 12:00 PM.
Ron will be laid to rest at Niles City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Stroke Association or the CAA Research Program at MGH.
