Liberty Township

Tanja Temelkoff, a beloved soul known for her unwavering love for dogs, passed away on April 14, 2024. She was 50.

Tanja was born on November 3, 1973, in Youngstown, Ohio, a daughter to Paul and Sonja (Todorovska) Temelkoff.

Tanja's life was marked by her deep compassion for animals, particularly dogs. She dedicated herself to rescuing and finding a loving home to numerous dogs in need, embodying a true spirit of kindness and generosity. Tanja's commitment to caring for all dogs shone brightly through her actions, leaving a lasting impact on those around her.

In addition to her passion for dogs, Tanja excelled academically and earned a Bachelor's degree in Marketing from Youngstown State University. Her creative talents extended beyond her academic pursuits; she once graced the theater stage of the Youngstown Playhouse, amongst other venues, with her presence and captivated audiences with her exceptional singing voice.  A natural beauty, she was in the Miss Ohio Pageant.  She was quick-witted and had an entertaining way with words.  She loved to dance.  She loved the ocean.  She loved working outdoors.

After surviving a long battle with Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, one of Tanja's proudest accomplishments was founding Youngstown Dogs: Surviving the Streets in 2010, a testament to her dedication to improving the lives of animals in her community. Through her efforts she rescued hundreds of dogs from abusive and neglectful situations and life on the streets, allowing them to experience safety, trust and love that they so deserved. Tanja had a natural gift as a dog whisperer that was simply amazing.  She also worked closely with Legacy Dog Rescue, further demonstrating her commitment to animal welfare.

Tanja is survived by her father Paul Temelkoff, mother Sonja Temelkoff, sisters Suzanne (Pete) Schisler and Christina Temelkoff, brothers David (Katy) Temelkoff and Daniel Temelkoff, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Those who knew Tanja will remember her as a kind-hearted individual with a genuine love for dogs and a passion for making a difference in the world. We were blessed with an Angel and her memory will live on through the countless lives she touched and the animals she rescued.  We will find comfort in knowing Tanja was greeted by her beloved Brownie (Mama B.), Munchkin, Mimi, Snowflake, Lenzie, cat Sammy, and all the other animals whose lives she touched and that they all crossed that Rainbow Bridge together.  What a glorious reunion!

Private services were held for the family.

Tanja will be laid to rest at Belmont Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial contributions/checks can be made to Legacy Dog Rescue, PO BOX 3643, Youngstown, OH 44513 or through Venmo @legacydogrescue.
